Neck Exercises to do at Work

Neck Exercises: Relieve Pain and Daily Tension

The neck is perhaps the most strained and simultaneously the most neglected part of the modern human body. If you spend hours in front of a computer, frequently look down at your phone, or drive for long periods, it is highly likely you have experienced stiffness, tightness, or even headaches. This is where specialized Neck Exercises become an essential tool for your well-being.

“Tech Neck” Syndrome and the Importance of Movement

We live in the era of “Screen Slouch” (Tech Neck). The human head weighs about 5 kilograms. When we lean forward to look at a screen, the load on the neck multiplies, creating immense pressure on the discs and muscles. This chronic strain doesn’t just cause localized pain; it can lead to numbness in the arms, dizziness, and chronic fatigue.

The solution does not lie in immobility, but in proper, targeted movement. The neck exercises we have selected for you are not simple stretches. They form a comprehensive therapeutic protocol aimed at:

  1. Restoring Posture: Exercises like the “Chin tuck” train the head to return to its proper position above the shoulders, reducing the load on the spine.

  2. Increasing Mobility: Lateral flexions and extensions “lubricate” the joints of the cervical spine, preventing the stiffness brought on by age and a sedentary lifestyle.

  3. Reducing Stress: Stress often accumulates in the shoulders and the levator scapulae. Stretches and shoulder circles help release this physical tension.

How to execute the program

The following program is designed to be safe and effective for the majority of people. It requires no equipment and can be done at the office or at home in just a few minutes. The secret to success in neck exercises is gentleness. Unlike other muscle groups, the neck doesn’t need force, but control and precision.

Start slowly, listen to your body, and never push past the point of pain. Consistency – doing these small movements daily – is more important than intensity.

Chin Tuck

Slowly pull your head straight back and slightly down. You will feel a mild tension in your neck.

Repeat 5-10 times | Perform 5 times daily

Neck Extension

Slowly tilt your head back until you feel pressure at the back of your neck.

Stop immediately if you feel dizzy or your vision blurs.

Repeat 5-10 times | Perform 5 times daily

Lateral Neck Flexion

Keeping your nose pointing forward, slowly bring your left ear toward your left shoulder. Repeat to the right. Keep the movement gentle and rhythmic.

Repeat 5-10 times | Perform 5 times daily | On both sides

Shoulder Circles

Make slow, large circles with your shoulders. Each time your shoulders go back and down, squeeze your shoulder blades together to “open up” your chest. Keep your arms relaxed at your sides.

Repeat 10-15 times

Levator Scapulae Stretch

Grab the edge of your chair with one hand to keep your shoulder down. Turn your head diagonally, as if looking at your opposite armpit. If needed, gently press your head down with your free hand until you feel a stretch on the side of your neck.

Repeat 2–3 times | Hold the stretch for 30–60 seconds each time

Important Note / Disclaimer

If your symptoms worsen or change significantly, pay attention to signs such as sharp pain, sudden weakness, unexplained weight loss, fever, persistent night pain, foot drop, loss of bladder or bowel control, vision disturbances, chest pain, difficulty swallowing or speaking, numbness, or anything else that seems concerning.

In case you notice any of the above, or if you have suffered a fall or injury and see no improvement, it is always best to visit an Emergency Department immediately for a check-up. It is important to be examined by a doctor purely for preventative reasons, to ensure you are completely safe.
