Definition of Pain

Pain is “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage”. It is not always a negative phenomenon; in fact, pain is necessary as it functions as an alarm system, alerting us to potential harm or injury.

Chronic musculoskeletal pain and frequency of occurrence

Chronic musculoskeletal pain refers to pain that occurs in muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and often nerves and persists for more than 3 months. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 33% of the world’s population, or about 1.75 billion people, suffer from some form of musculoskeletal pain, either acute or chronic. Specifically in workplace environments, neck and back pain are the most common conditions that can affect employees. However, treating chronic pain often requires a different and holistic approach compared to that for pain lasting a short period of time.

Challenges in the workplace due to pain

In the modern workplace of the Western world, it is now very common to see employees complaining of discomfort and pain arising from musculoskeletal problems. Poor posture, repetitive motions, and inadequate equipment can contribute significantly to work-related pain. When employees fail to address these underlying causes, they heighten the risk of exacerbating their pain and increase the chances of developing a potential “disability”. This situation frequently results in diminished productivity, a rise in sick leave, and could ultimately force individuals to permanently leave their profession due to severe health consequences that render them unable to work. Effective pain management is essential for safeguarding mental health, preventing injuries, and for sustaining enhanced productivity and continued employment.
