Driving and Musculoskeletal Pain: Why Professional Drivers Are Affected

Musculoskeletal pain in professional drivers – Causes and prevention

Introduction

Professional drivers face a high risk of developing musculoskeletal pain due to their specific working conditions. Prolonged sitting, constant vehicle vibrations, awkward postures, and repetitive movements create an environment that significantly burdens the musculoskeletal system.

A recent systematic review, which included data from 56 studies in 23 countries and 18,882 drivers, highlighted the extensive nature of the problem, covering 14 different types of driving jobs.

What the data shows

The results of the analysis are alarming:

  • 43.1% to 93% of drivers reported the presence of musculoskeletal pain.
  • The lower back (lumbar spine) is the most commonly affected area, with a rate of about 53%.
  • Other frequently affected areas are the neck, shoulders, and upper back, which indicates the overall physical strain of the profession.

Why musculoskeletal pain occurs in drivers

The nature of the job leads to multiple risk factors:

  • Prolonged sitting posture without breaks.
  • Vibrations from the road and vehicle.
  • Poor seat and steering wheel adjustment.
  • Repetitive hand and shoulder movements.

All these factors increase the risk of developing low back pain and other musculoskeletal problems.

Prevention and management strategies

To reduce the burden on professional drivers, targeted interventions are required, including:

  • Ergonomics training: proper posture, seat, and steering wheel adjustments.
  • Regular breaks for movement and stretching.
  • Assessment and adjustment of vehicle equipment.
  • Specialized return-to-work programs for drivers who have suffered injuries or chronic pain.
